2011 REUNION TOURS

Virginia and Truckee Railroad Tour  - $79.60 per person

The Virginia and Truckee Railroad, known as the "Queen of the Short Lines", first rolled in 1870. Its legendary engines and engineers opened the silver hills of Nevada's Comstock Lode through some of the steepest and curviest rail lines in America. Travel back to the bonanza days on a scenic ride. The conductor tells the story of Nevada’s late 18th century mining boom when the V&T was built and Virginia City was the riches city on earth, with more millionaires than anywhere else.

In it’s hey-day as many as 45 trains a day arrived and departed Virginia City. The line was completed in 1869 and for the following 70 years hauled millions of dollars in gold and silver ore from the mines of Virginia City.

The Virginia and Truckee Railroad is now a tourism line, steaming passengers from Virginia City to Gold Hill to Carson City. Your trip will begin in Virginia City to Gold Hill through American Flats on to Haywood and back into Virginia City.

Today, 60 years after the last train left the Comstock, you will have the opportunity to ride in your choice of the open cars or in the caboose, all of which are over 72 years old.

When your group returns to Virginia City your MotorCoach will take you to the Center of Virginia City and your personal guide will escort you through the downtown, telling many legends of “rags to riches” and “riches to rags”.

Your group will first have Lunch and then you will discover the beautiful Victorian mansions built by the mine-owners and stroll through the vary mines that made them rich. They will also have some time to stroll the wooden sidewalks and explore their individual interests. They will be able to browse through the many original saloons, gambling halls, and antique shops or visit old Victorian mansions, museums and churches.

After spending some time and having lunch you will board your Motor Coach for your trip back to your Hotel.

Your Beyond Travel Guide will stay with your group throughout the day, not only to share the rich history of Virginia City, but also to make sure that the day runs “without a hitch”. Most importantly we want to make sure that a good time has been had by all!

A Day in Virginia City - $60.75

As you ascend into the foothills, the exciting history of Virginia City and how this boomtown came to life will be revealed. Built on the riches of gold and silver ore, Virginia City was not only known as "the richest place on earth," but was also the biggest city between San Francisco and St. Louis in the 1860's. Abounding with 30,000 people and 110 saloons, it was an affluent and rowdy population! Today, Virginia City stands as a link to the past - a town vibrant with the activities of visitors and filled with memories of ghosts of days gone by.

Once your group arrives your personal guide will escort them through the downtown telling many legends of "rags to riches" and "riches to rags." Your group will discover the beautiful Victorian mansions built by the mine owners. They will also have some time to themselves to stroll the wooden sidewalks and explore their individual interests. Whether they would like to browse through the many original saloons, gambling halls and antique shops or visit old Victorian mansions, museums and churches.

Ponderosa Gold Mine Tour through the only gold mine located in one of the oldest saloons on the main street of Virginia City. See the complete underground mine workings of an authentic gold and silver mine. Experienced miners will guide you through tunnels as you descend deeper into the shaft. You will see the actual tunnels, crosscuts and various tools that the miners used in the old Comstock. Your Beyond Travel Guide will stay with your group throughout the day, not only to share the rich history of Virginia City, but also to make sure that the day runs "without a hitch." Most importantly we want to make sure that all has had a good time!

Donner, Truckee, North Shore Tahoe Tour - $52.00

This tour takes you on a scenic drive from Reno into California to the famous Donner Memorial State Park. Here you will have the opportunity to view a dramatic short film about the plight of the Donner Party and to visit the small historical museum which further elaborates on this tragic story. Included in the museum are displays and information about one of the early pioneer wagon trains, the Donner party forced by circumstances to camp at the east end of Donner Lake in the winter of 1846 - 1847, resulting in huiman suffering and loss of life.

Next you will visit the old railroad town of Truckee. Here you will have time to do a little shopping. You will find a variety of galleries, gift shops and other specialty stores, many of which are located in historic buildings of which many of these structures have been renovated and date back as far as the 1860's.

Your next destination is Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. You will have the opportunity to take some pictures of this beautiful area and visit their specialty shops.

From Squaw Valley you will travel along the beautiful north shore of Lake Tahoe driving through numerous small communities built along the shoreline. You will stop at one of the beaches along the north shore to enjoy a box lunch. You will also pass by the famous old Cal-Neva Casino and Hotel, once owned by Frank Sinatra and a favorite destination for many of his notorious and famous friends.

Your tour guide will give you the history of the area as you travel along the most beautiful landscaping area around Lake Tahoe returning to Reno along the Mount Rose.

PYRAMID LAKE MUSEUM and FISH HATCHERY - $50.00

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribes Reservation is located thirty five miles northwest of Reno Nevada in a remote desert area located in the counties of Washoe, Lyon and storey. The area of the reservation contains 475,000 acres or 742.2 square miles. Out of this acreage approximately 112,000 acres cover the surface of a terminal desert lake, Pyramid Lake. The lake is one of the most valuable assets of the tribe and is entirely enclosed within the boundaries of the reservation. Pyramid Lake is approximately 15 miles long and 11 miles wide. The lake is 350 feet deep at its deepest point.

Much of the economy on Pyramid Lake is centered around fishing and receational activities at the lake. In addition to permit fees for fishing, day use and overnight camping, the tribe also receives lease revenue and tax revenue. Several tribal members belong to the Pyramid Lake Cattleman's Cooperative and manage the individual cattle herds. This Pyramid lake Tribal Museum in Nixon will acquaint you with the history and culture of the Paiute Tribe of Pyramid Lake.

The goal of Pyramid Lake Fisheries is to maintain a recreational fishery at Pyramid Lake while working collaboratively with partners to protect, conserve and restore aquatic resources including habitats in the Truckee River Basin. The visitor center explains the purpose of the hatchery and includes a photo display with the people of Pyramid Lake.

The 2009 All Ships Reunion was held again at Harrah's Hotel/Casino in Reno, Nevada, Sunday 26 April thru Wednesday 29 April. Approximately 300 persons attended. Crew members representing 168 ships and small craft attended making it the best reunion yet! The Coast Guard Combat Veteran's reunion was also held at the Atlantis the same weekend. Many of the attendees were members of both groups and were able to participate in both functions. One of the highlights was the presence of Pat Pimsner (purser), Len Specia (stewardess) and Frank Garcia (flight engineer) aboard Panam 90943 that ditched at Ocean Station November October 16, 1956, and were all rescued by the CGC Pontchartrain. Also there were three crew members of the Pontchartrain: Wayne Hokum (radarman), Dick Olson (boatswain mate) and Doak Walker (radioman) present. We also had some other Panam people in attendance from that era. Our guest speaker Mike Walling, a Coast Guard author, is presently writing a book on this event and of the Bermuda Sky Queen. He was able to gather a lot of first hand information from reunion attendees. Again this reunion the CGC Minnetonka W67 crew members outnumbered the CGC Winnebago W40 with 27 crew from the Minnie and 24 from the Winnebago. Of the tours that were offered, the Lake Tahoe Sightseeing Luncheon Cruise aboard the paddle wheel propelled M.S. Dixie was the most popular with 67 attendees racking up a little more underway time. The Virginia City Tour had 31 visiting the old boom town. The Truckee Tour attracted 18 guests and the Reno City Tour had 15 persons on the local tour. The other event was a golf tournamant held at the Wild Creek Golf Club in Sparks that drew 12 hardy duffers. Another hit of the reunion was Jeff Hickman who drew caricatures of many of the guests. Keep an eye out here for information on our 2011 reunion. Best wishes for the new year 2010.

Change in Website
Written by Ken Laesser
In keeping with the change in reunion policy, the web site will now be dedicated to all ocean stations vessels from after WWII to ending of the weather stations in the late 1970s.

The site will be broken up into sections covering the 5 major cutter classes that manned these stations, 327 foot Secretary class, 255' Owasco class, 306' Edsall class DEs, 311' Casco class, and the 378' Hero class cutters. The sections will be broken int categories covering the individual cutters of that class. Each cutter may have unlimited amount of stories, events etc.

There will also be a "Virtual Meeting Room" for each cutter where you can just drop in an say hello to your former shipmates (this is similar to the virtual reunion hall at Fred's Place. You will have to be a "registered User" to use this service

I have a fairly good start on material entries for the site but as the only webmaster for the site it is very hard to do all the research so I am asking each and everyone of you to send me any story, event, who was CO when youwere aboard (and dates if known). I have much of the info on the 255s thanks to our historian Doak Walker.  Any input on improving or changing the site will always be welcome.

We know that many of the 255 sailors already know of the site but sailors of the other vessels may not therefore if you have contact wih any we would appreciate it if you would pass the word to them and ask them to do the same. Not only will it be good for the site but it will also help in making our next "All OSV Reunion" an even bigger success than the one this past May in Reno

Appreciate any help you can give me. Anything nay be sent to me via This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or through the Contact section of the site
